Women’s Personal Protection – Live Seminar!

June 10, 2009

Women's Personal Protection Live Seminar!

Women’s Personal Protection at Karate World
By Karate World
6/10/2009

On Thursday, June 18th, Karate World will host a personal safety workshop for women ages 16 and up. Participants will learn how to defend themselves against common attacks, how to handle other real world self-defense scenarios, and how to recognize “The Five Stages of Violent Crime.” This workshop will be especially valuable for the college bound. The event will be held from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. Our live seminar is offered free of charge, but you must register to reserve your spot.

The “Five Stages of Violent Crime” is an internationally recognized pattern in abusive and violent act scenarios. These Five Stages are processes that take time to develop. The actual attack or assault is not the first step in a violent act. Three preliminary steps always occur before an act of violence and two steps follow – Intent, Interview and Positioning, then the Attack and the victim’s Response.

Karate World’s seminar is designed to teach women how to eliminate the violent scenario before it happens, to avert the crime altogether. Unlike a purely self-defense based approach to personal safety and protection, our seminar is designed to develop effective strategies to avoid the likelihood of the violent act occurring in the first place.

According to Karate World co-owner Michelle Brugger, “Our goal is to empower women by teaching them how to recognize and avoid dangerous situations. We realize that not everybody has the time to participate in a Martial Arts program, but everyone can benefit from being well-informed and knowing how to respond in a potentially dangerous scenario.”

Karate World instructors are certified by The National Security Alliance’s Kid-Safe & Women-Safe Network. These networks are non-profit organizations that provide free safety and danger awareness seminars, fairs and family workshops across the United States and Canada designed to educate parents, educators and citizens about the dangers women and children face every day.

Space is limited so please contact Karate World at (908) 464 – 2836 to register for the free event. You can also register online at www.BeginKarate.com/Defend

Karate World is located in The Village Shopping Center, 1260 Springfield Avenue, New Providence, NJ.

Summer Safety Tips For Kids from Karate World

May 13, 2009

Summer Safety Tips for Kids

2009 Summer Safety Tips

1. Always CHECK FIRST with your parents, guardians, or the trusted adult in charge before you go anywhere or do anything. CHECK IN regularly with your parents, guardians, or a trusted adult when you’re not with them.

2. Never accept treats or gifts from anyone without  your parents’ or guardians’ permission.

3. Stay SAFER when you’re home alone by keeping the door locked; not opening the door for or talking to anyone who stops by unless the person is a trusted family friend or relative, you feel comfortable being alone with that person, and the visit has been pre-approved by your parents or guardians; and never telling anyone who calls that you’re home by yourself. Have a neighbor or trusted adult you can call if you feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused or there’s an emergency.

4. Never go into a public rest room by yourself.

5. Never go alone to malls, movies, or parks and always CHECK FIRST with your parents or guardians to make sure it’s okay.

6. Don’t panic if you feel lost. Safe people who can help you include other mothers with children, a uniformed law-enforcement or security officer, person with a name tag who is working at the store.

7. Be careful when you play. Don’t play near busy streets or deserted areas, and never take shortcuts unless you have your parents’ or guardians’ permission.

8. Don’t wear clothes or carry items with your name on the outside, and don’t be confused just because a person you don’t know calls out your name.

9. Don’t get into a vehicle or go near a vehicle with anyone in it unless you are with your parents, guardians, or a trusted adult. Never take a ride from anyone without CHECKING FIRST with your parents or guardians.

10. Be careful playing or riding your bicycle as it gets dark. Sometimes it is difficult for people driving to see you. Wear reflectors and protective clothing if your parents or guardians say you can play outside after dark.

11. Don’t be afraid to say NO and GET AWAY from any situation that makes you feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused. TRUST YOUR FEELINGS, and be sure to TELL a trusted adult what happened.

12. Always TAKE A FRIEND with you when playing or going anywhere. It’s safer and more fun.

Our goal is to provide 12 Summer Safety Tips that you can review with your children. We sincerely hope you find these safety tips helpful to keep your children safe this summer.

March 14, 2009
What are your qualifications?

What are your qualifications?

Friends,

I was surfing the internet and I came across the following job posting for a Martial Arts instructor at a new gym in our area. I was curious to see the type of qualifications that are required for someone to teach Martial Arts at “XYZ Fitness.” Below, for your reading pleasure is the post on the job site. The names have been changed to protect the guilty.

Wow.

This is tough stuff, folks. High school diploma, 6 months of Martial Arts training, AND the ability to crouch?

No mention of background check, certifications of any kind, or drug testing for someone who will be comfortable teaching Martial Arts to “all age groups.”

There are numerous well qualified instructors that have dedicated the better part of their adult life developing their Martial Arts and teaching skills. If you are searching for Martial Arts for yourself or your child I pray you seek out someone who has more than 6 months experience (that would be the equivalent of an Orange or Gold Belt in most Martial Arts systems) to guide you or your children on your journey in the Martial Arts.

Wishing you every success,

Master Rich Brugger

On Friday, February 28th, veteran Karate World students of all ages graduated to the rank of High Brown Belt. These students have been training at Karate World of New Providence for an average of 3 years. The students’ next goal is the coveted Black Belt.

P.P.S. Here is some feedback from some of our newest students’ families:

“Kira has tried other sports and activities, from soccer to gymnastics. With Karate World she has been very engaged and is constantly practicing her forms and trying to improve her techniques. She very much enjoys the structure and physical nature. Also, her home and school life have been more focused and disciplined. Kira is more likely to help clean, keep up with homework and spend less time in front of the television and video games.” - Mr. Jerry B., New Providence NJ

“Karate World has been a wonderful confidence booster for my child. I believe each of my children should have at least one extra-curricular activity where they can learn & excel at. Michelle has been so happy and proud of all she is learning at Karate World. She is especially excited after each attitude stripe she receives. I’d say Karate World has a wonderful philosophy, teaching children respect, discipline, focus, hard work and the importance of being physically fit. We’re all very happy with our decision to send our child to Karate World.” - Mrs. Hom, Berkeley Heights NJ

…and a word from one of our more experienced student’s family

“Thomas has been with Karate World for about a year now. He continues to enjoy going to class, he continues to be more focused, and he is learning greater respect. Our Karate World experience has been truly positive! Not only does he benefit from the Martial Arts training, but he has also been taught several great life skills. Karate World is a very comfortable place in which to learn, and Thomas loves it!” – Mrs. Barca, New Providence NJ

How To Defeat A Bully

February 8, 2009
How To Defeat The Bully

How To Defeat A Bully

How To Defeat A Bully

Information compiled by Mike D.

Children face attacks on their self-esteem from a variety of sources. One type of attack I’d like to address is the common “Bully.” Bullies have been considered a part of growing up, but how a child deals with, and the repercussions of dealing with bullies, have changed over time. Some schools now have “Zero Tolerance” rules that punish both children if there is an altercation, so the old adage of “If they hit you, hit ‘em back!” doesn’t always work today.

Even though incidences of bullying vary in severity, one thing for certain is that repeated attacks whether verbal, physical, or written (yes written, since there have been reports of children being bullied through e-mail and by content placed on websites) erode your child’s self-esteem.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has linked bullying to coping behaviors that include isolation, drug use, violence and suicide. But your child does not have to be a victim!

Whether the assault is verbal or physical the first line of defense remains the same — Self-confidence — and here’s why: Bullies choose their victims much like criminals choose victims; they go for the easy and obvious target. If your child looks like a kid who can get bullied, he most likely will be. On the other hand, if your child radiates self-confidence he is less likely to be a victim. Your child needs to walk with his or her head up; shoulders square, and make eye contact with people. Just doing so may be enough to keep bullies at bay. Although this is easier said than done, it can be learned and kids learn by doing. So a change in body language may have huge impact. Teach your kids how to speak up and to speak clearly when they first meet someone. Teach them the importance of making eye-contact when they talk to you and others.

Another layer of defense we teach our students is to create a boundary. We teach students how to protect their space with an assertive body posture — feet slightly apart, one foot in front, shoulders square, chin up, eye contact, and most importantly, hands up as if making a “Stop” gesture. We call this our self-defense stance, and it is designed to get them out of trouble by communicating neutrality, awareness, and assertiveness.

Your child may also have to use words as a form of protection. Simple phrases and commands said in a confident voice will tell the bully that he is not dealing with a victim. Simple commands like: “Stop,” “Back Off,” said in the right tone of voice may stop a bully in his tracks!

As you can see, dealing with a bully has its challenges and there is no one way that works every time. However, when your child develops high levels of self-esteem and self-confidence, a bully’s words or actions have less of an impact.
