How to Teach Kids Respect

December 28, 2008

Using Martial Arts Principles to Teach Your Kids Respect

1. Begin by teaching your child good manners. Then, insist that they always be used. Explain that bad manners will be considered disobedient behavior.

2. Show respect, to yourself, to others. Don’t talk disrespectfully about your boss, your mother-in-law, or your neighbor. If your child overhears you saying, “My boss is so stupid,” it will make it difficult for her to not copy those attitudes.

3. Keep your word. Do what you say you are going to do.

4. Show zero tolerance for disrespect. Start when kids are small – when their disrespect is small, too. Don’t let it grow (Have you ever heard the expression, “Slay the dragon while it is small?” This should apply to any undesirable behavior – address it before it gets out of hand.

5. Show respectful and disrespectful behavior, in others, and its consequences. Disrespect hurts the disrespectful person. Show this to your kids.

6. Teach that respect is earned, not automatic. It’s earned by showing respect.

7. Privileges are earned by respectful behavior, and forfeited by disrespectful behavior.

8. Don’t just expect it – teach it! Don’t just teach it – expect it.
