Halloween Safety Tips from Karate World of New Providence, NJ
View a short Halloween Safety Video: Halloween Safety
Costume Safety: Make certain that your child’s costume does not obstruct his or her eyesight. Obviously, impaired vision poses great danger when your child is crossing the street or walking door to door. If possible, use make-up instead of a mask and avoid eye-patches or floppy wigs. If a mask must be worn make sure the eye holes are large enough to allow both forward and peripheral vision. Also make sure that capes or any other pieces of the costume are not too long or a threat to get tangled in your youngster’s feet.
Candy Safety: Make sure that your child knows that no candy is to be eaten without Mom or Dad inspect it and approve. Any fruit or unwrapped candy (like loose jellybeans) should not be trusted.
General Rules: In the case of older children who may go trick or treating with a group of friends, be sure to set some ground rules. Make sure they understand they are never to enter a stranger’s house or accept a ride in a vehicle. They should skip homes that are not well lit or do not have any lights on. It is also a good idea to set a curfew and have your child “check in” ever couple of hours if they have a cell phone they can carry.
Safety After Dark: If your kids are going to trick or treat after dark this year be sure to bring a flashlight. It is also a good idea to make sure that costumes are visible to motorists. Use reflective tape if necessary. It is inevitable that youngsters will be crossing the street, make sure that they can be seen.
Remember: Halloween falls on a Saturday this year and daytime Trick or Treating is always safer than night time Trick or Treating for the younger crowd.
Trick or Treating at businesses in downtown New Providence will be held on Friday, October 30th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Be sure to stop by and see us for some candy!
